The heart of the East Coast of Sri Lanka.

Our planet — Our heritage — Our memories.

Architechture Experience

A key aspect of the Mannankulam Experience is a glimpse into contemporary Sri Lankan architecture through access to four personal homes from early 19th-century colonial architecture, 1950’s gracious country house, 1960’s tropical design to the latest contemporary tropical architecture of Anjalendran, who worked and collaborated with Geoffrey Bawa in the 1980’s.. Each of these unique spaces embodies a unique fusion of tradition and modernity, rooted in the island’s rich cultural heritage and diverse influences.

Three of our spaces have been exemplified by the work of C. Anjalendran, whose architectural style is characterised by a deep respect for local material and craftsmanship. His structures often feature open spaces, natural ventilation, and sustainable design practices, reflecting a harmonious relationship with the tropical climate and environment.

Drawing inspiration from Sri Lanka’s historical architecture, Anjalendran adeptly combines traditional elements such as courtyards, verandas, and intricate woodwork with innovative approaches, resulting in timeless and elegant spaces that celebrate the country’s architectural legacy while embracing the demands of contemporary living. His designs evoke a sense of cultural identity, authenticity, and reverence for the architectural heritage of Sri Lanka, which can be seen in person across two of Mannankulam’s unique properties.
