About Us

The Mannankulam Experience offers a unique opportunity for comfortable, cultural engagement through a series of personally curated itineraries which celebrates Sri Lanka’s East Coast, and its capital city, Colombo. Expect to be mesmerised by stunning landsc apes in off-beat locations, along with an introduction to Sri Lankan contemporary art, sculpture, architecture, history, nature  and a cuisine that few have experienced before.

Mannankulam is a collection of authentic experiences which range from two nights to a full-blown multi-day itinerary set across four personal homes, each with a rich history to the land and unique Sri Lankan design. We are located in four inspiring locations, namely Akkaraipattu and Batticaloa on the East Coast, Colombo and Battarmulla on the West Coast.

Each of our experiences includes a stay in one of these personal homes, along with a unique culinary offering and engaging moments with beautiful surroundings and intriguing local knowledge. The homes are good examples of Sri Lankan architecture from early 19th-century colonial architecture, 1950’s gracious country house, 1960’s tropical design to the latest contemporary tropical architecture of Anjalendran, who worked and collaborated with Geoffrey Bawa in the 1980’s.

Through our series of Mannankulam experiences, we hope to provide travellers a more mindful and culturally immersive way to experience a way of life in unique locations on the east coast, which we have a deep and personal history with.

Culture

The culture of Sri Lanka’s east coast is a rich tapestry woven from centuries of diverse influences, blending indigenous traditions with those of various settlers and traders who have graced its shores.

Food

The cuisine here is a celebration of aromatic spices, fresh seafood, and tropical ingredients. Seafood takes centre stage in many East Coast dishes, and at Mannankulam, we offer a taste of authentic Batticaloa cuisine made from old traditional family recipes.

Nature

The region boasts picturesque sandy shores fringed by palm trees swaying in the gentle sea breeze with numerous lagoons providing vital habitats for various indigenous plant, aquatic and bird species not forgetting the larger mammals such as the elephant and leopard.

History

With the Batticaloa port playing an important role throughout history, the East Coast witnessed the rise and fall of various ancient kingdoms, as well as periods of colonial rule under the Portuguese, Dutch, and British.

Art

At Mannankulam, we share our love of the island’s contemporary and ancient art through a private collection of sculptures, paintings, photographs and more from our favourite Sri Lankan artists.

Architecture

A key aspect of the Mannankulam Experience is a glimpse into Sri Lankan architecture from early 19th-century colonial architecture to the contemporary tropical architecture of Anjalendran through access to four personal homes.

Mannankulam Villa Akkaraipattu

Mannankulam Villa and Estate, is located in Akkaraipattu, a major trading post and transport hub on the East Coast of Sri Lanka. The estate and villa provide total privacy and absolute peace to re-energise.

15LMD is also situated on the eastern coast in Batticaloa, which is renowned for its scenic lagoons and historic sites. Batticaloa offers visitors a blend of natural beauty and cultural richness, with attractions ranging from pristine beaches to ancient temples.

Located in central Colombo, Flower Road Villa, a 1960’s villa, offers unbeatable proximity to the Colombo National Museum, diverse dining and shopping options, parks, and art galleries.

Ehela Villa
Battaramulla

Designed by Anjalendran and named after the tree around which this generous villa was built, Ehela Villa provides a peaceful base to explore Colombo and easy access to the highway.
