Our planet — Our heritage — Our memories.

Mannankulam Villa - Akkaraipattu

Mannankulam Villa is set on a peaceful 25 acre estate. We have an ongoing scientific programme to restore biodiversity in what is an agricultural property by zoning buffer areas. The villa comprises a courtyard house complete with four double bedrooms and attached bathrooms. There are several large common areas (living room, TV room, library, dining room), furnished with some of the best contemporary local art and sculptures. Why should you stay here?

As the mythical golden bird Phoenix rises from the ashes, Mannankulam Villa and its estate have been restored and continue to be rejuvenated.

Although looted, burnt and destroyed in 1985, we never gave up hope. We dreamed of one day re-opening our doors to family and friends and in 1994, when there was a glimmer of peace, our close friend Anjalendran visited and helped us measure the existing floor plan. In his usual style, he immediately sketched the improvements – additional toilets and a couple of other changes – nothing major but a huge improvement in the comfort, feel of space and vistas. The magic of Anjalendran’s work is that he has helped us keep the memories of the place, very much alive.

The garden has been landscaped with indigenous plants from the area to attract birds and butterflies. The garden is also a backdrop to large sculptures.

The estate, to which the guests have access, provides 25 acres of absolute peace. We have an ongoing scientific programme to restore biodiversity in what is an agricultural property by zoning buffer areas. The latest survey results show that there are 227 plants, 59 birds and 33 butterflies species. Walking paths and seats are provided to observe nature and a naturalist on hand to explain the scientific work as well our programme.
